MIA Mello Yellow

I have been MIA here..caught up with life's daily struggle to keep it all together..if I could I would make light graffiti every day, but sometimes art waits patiently..until I can kick it into gear I will post some old school favs when possible..

For Jerry Saltz

I made these photos on 6.16.09 in front of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC in support of Jerry Saltz's Facebook post on 5.29.09 objecting to this : 'The Museum of Modern Art practices a form of gender-based apartheid. Of the 383 works currently installed on the 4th and 5th floors of the permanent collection, only 19 are by women; that’s 4%.'
GO JERRY! & THANKS!

No Justice..Fed Charges To Come?

Not surprisingly, very sadly, the all white jury acquitted two Shenandoah, PA teens of all serious charges in the brutal beating death of Luis E. Ramirez, known by friends as El Caballo, from Mexico. Not surprising because this is a place where Latinos are routinely despised and racism is rampant. Fueled by the sentiments and immigration 'reform' campaigns of people like Hazleton mayor Lou Barletta, this hatred will undoubtedly and unfortunately continue to grow. During the trial, one of the defendants, Derrick Donchak, 19, was shown in a photo by the prosecution wearing a T-shirt saying ''U.S. Border Patrol'' to a Halloween party just three months after Ramirez's death. That tells you a lot about the lack of remorse and the feeding of intolerance on his part. Ironic for a town known historically as a melting pot for immigrants and has an annual Heritage Day parade.

Baseball Season

May Day seems like a good day for baseball. Looking back over old work can be useful in determining why you go in any number of directions as an artist. References to literal or underlying meanings abound. These photos were my beginnings of word play on site. Obvious as they are, I wanted them that way. I was always putting myself in the photos back then too. And all I had for a flash was a 100 watt light bulb--same thing I used to write the words.

Shenandoah Murder Trial

Last night I made these photos at the Schuylkill County Courthouse in Pottsville, PA in reference to the upcoming murder trial beginning on April 27, 2009, in the ethnic intimidation case of two white teenagers (four were actually involved--one pleaded guilty in federal court to violating Ramirez's civil rights and the other teen is being tried in juvenile court for aggravated assault and ethnic intimidationcharged in connection with the July 12, 2008 beating death of 25 year old Luis E. Ramirez.
